These days, dads are more and more involved with the whole process of having a baby. There are entire books dedicated to what he’s going through while his partner’s pregnant. Dads are present not only in the delivery room, but at prenatal appointments as well. Stores now have baby gift registries geared toward mothers AND fathers. And, more and more commonly, dads are being included at baby showers.

As you may guess, “typical” baby showers aren’t the kind of affairs most dad’s would opt to be a part of…and so a new animal has been born: The Couples Shower. If you find yourself in the position of hosting a couples baby shower but are daunted by how to make sure everyone, dads included, enjoys themselves, here are a few ideas to get you started:

• Food: This will be the most important part of the shower for many guys, and most of them probably won’t go in much for frou-frou “fancy” food. Think sub sandwiches vs. finger sandwiches, and snack mix over butter mints. Also, you maybe want to leave the tiny punch cups in the cupboard.

• Games: Whatever you may have read, most guys probably won’t get a kick out of guzzling beer (or anything really) out of baby bottles—no matter how funny you think it will be. Instead of traditional structured shower games, consider tracking down some old, retro video games or selecting a shower location adjacent to a pool table. If you’re in love with the idea of traditional baby shower games, you could leave participation optional, and be sure your guests know it’s ok to “just watch.”

• Gifts: While many dads do enjoy fawning over precious little baby clothes (at least through the first two outfits), consider gearing your baby shower gifts  toward Dad-to-be’s interests a bit: a gadget like a baby monitor or some awesome adult-friendly kid music are winners. Or maybe you could make that adorable baby outfit a jersey from Dad’s favorite team.

Overall, the most important thing to remember is to have fun. If the atmosphere at your shower is laid-back and casual, your guests are sure to enjoy themselves.
